Change The Words

For over a decade, P&G’s My Black is Beautiful (MBIB) stands firm in its commitment to champion the beauty in Black beauty and culture. In an effort to shift perceptions at large, MBIB rallied to contest how we define “Black”.  Literally.

The Challenge.

Our community understands that Black is beautiful. No asterisk. No quotations. Yet, there were negative words in dictionaries that defined “Black” otherwise.  Words that were offensive, non-representative or inaccurate.

The Idea.

Words impact us and influence perceptions.  The #RedefineBlack: Call for Change campaign reflects MBIB’s mission to spotlight bias - driving dialogue and advocating for the review and change of negative associations with “Black”.

The Impact.

Following the #RedefineBlack: Call for Change campaign, both Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster updated their definitions, deprioritizing outdated terms or references that could lead to unconscious associations and bias.
